| HAPPY NEW YEAR!!
I am really counting on you, 2009. Don't let me down.
I'm leaving for Shanghai tomorrow. i don't think it's really set in yet. I just know that I'll really miss my family. My crazy parents, my silly sister, my always-loving bed, with whom I've spent many precious, lazy hours. goodbye, america.
So because Xanga is banned in China, I will be blogging here:

I'll miss you, everyone!
edit: i don't think the link works if you click it, but if you type it in, i'm pretty sure it'll go through.

| I am ashamed to admit that I am now a "Twilight" fangirl. I love Edward Cullen. I want Edward Cullen to bite me and turn me into his vampire bride.
Before this weekend, I read the four books twice and also "Midnight Sun," the partial draft of Edward's perspective on "Twilight," once.
Then, this weekend, I read "Midnight Sun" alongside "Twilight," chapter by chapter, to get a more complete grasp of the development of Bella and Edward's relationship.
I know. I'm completely insane. It's unhealthy to be this obsessed with a fictional character. But Edward is just so GOOD, romantic, and SO IN LOVE. It's complete fantasy, but it's like the most perfect fantasy ever.
It also doesn't help that my sister is also obsessed with Twilight. I think crazy is more potent in numbers.
At first, I disapproved of the story because the situation was just so far-fetched. Bella and Edward don't really have any real, human obstacles. They don't have to worry about growing old and changing emotionally and physically. They don't have to worry about waking up next to someone and not knowing who they are anymore or how they got such a big beer belly. Nor do they have to worry about money, which is like what 75% of fights between couples are about. So I was too skeptical about the relationship to be really into it.
But then I read on Wikipedia that Edward Cullen was heavily influenced by Edward Rochester, the hero of "Jane Eyre," one of my favoritest books ever. Edward Rochester is...tortured, but innately good. He is MANLY, but damaged. And most of all, he loves Jane Eyre with an almost supernatural passion. Edward Fairfax Rochester is a man that knows who he is and knows what he wants. That kind of confidence is just plain sexy. That's why I'm not so into Mr. Darcy, because he has an arrogance that comes from his money and his position, not his experiences and his deep, unabiding love.
So, technically, I am both an Edward Cullen AND Edward Rochester fangirl. And, let's face it, that's not really anything to be ashamed of.

| Countdown to Shanghai
Days left: 5
Packing done: 0%
Instead of packing, I'm spending my time eyeing my clothes resentfully hoping they will all magically fit themselves in my suitcase. Well, potential suitcase, because I haven't even chosen a suitcase yet.
Either way, I know that once my sister gets back from sending me off at the airport, she'll start to pick over the leftovers. I feel sorry for the clothes that are going to get chewed on, food-stained, and worn over and over again for 4 days straight.
So my main worry about Shanghai is the cold. I've never really lived in a cold place. I think the coldest I've ever experienced was a Thanksgiving in Mammoth, but that doesn't really count, because there was heating at night and lots and lots of sun during the day. Apparently, Shanghai is super windy and BONE-CHILLINGLY cold and rainy. I remember enough of waking up to ridiculous coldness and walking home from the bus stop in the rain after work this past winter to know that I do not want any part of that, but beggars can't be choosers, right?

| We all know the classic Christmas song "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer." It goes:
Rudolph the red-nosed reindeer Had a very shiny nose And if you ever saw it You would even say it glows All of the other reindeer Used to laugh and call him names They never let poor Rudolph Play in any reindeer games
Then one foggy Christmas Eve Santa came to say Rudolph with your nose so bright Won't you lead my sleigh tonight? Then all the reindeer loved him And they shouted out with glee "Rudolph the red-nosed reindeer You'll go down in history!"
As I was listening to this song being played over the radio at the mall, I was surprised at how MEAN it was. I mean, these reindeer are like mean schoolchildren, excluding Rudolph only because of a different-colored nose. They wouldn't let Rudolph play any reindeer games, denying him acceptance to his very SPECIES. He couldn't be validated by his reindeer-ness because he couldn't play the games!
And where was Santa through all of this? Sitting on his toy throne watching his top reindeer humiliate Rudolph? Don't tell me Santa was preoccupied with toy-making, because the elves have got that covered. And it's not like Santa is busy on any day besides December 24. No, Santa just stood by and let Rudolph be tormented by his peers.
And then it gets foggy and now EVERYONE needs Rudolph. The reindeer who were cruel to him and the person who refused to defend him all of a sudden NEED him?! If I were Rudolph, I'd be like "You on your OWN. I quit the North Pole. I'm gonna go find me a girl reindeer and settle down in the South Pole where the penguins treat each other a lot better."
The reindeer eventually are only nice to Rudolph because Rudolph was selfless and let them feel better about their cruel selves. I know the song doesn't mention it, but i am SURE some major drama went down before Rudolph took off leading the rest of the pack. He better have required some major grovelling, a RAISE, and first dibs on the toys.
MERRY CHRISTMAS!!!!!

| For my flight to Shanghai, I am taking China Eastern Airlines, which I have never taken before and am quite worried about. Apparently, it is one of the only airlines that fly directly to Shanghai, so I kind of have no choice, but it sounds pretty sketchy to me. My dad, who recently flew on it for a business trip, told me that they don't have like the movies on the back of the chair thing. WTF?! What am I supposed to do for 13 hours?! I'm pretty good at sleeping, but I'm not confident that I can sleep for 13 hours straight. Before the introduction of in-seat entertainment, I used to get really sick and vomit all the time. Magazines and books only last for so long before you crave a good movie to distract you from the fact that you're on a metal contraption 6 miles in the air for more than half a day with 300 other people who have their own problems and issues and sicknesses, mental and physical.
Ugh here's their description:
"Economy Class on the 340 also offers newly designed seats with 32-34 inches of pitch, and audio inflight entertainment. Televisions are regularly spaced throughout the cabin and generally show two western films, one chinese film, one french film and a news broadcast. There is a full selection of drinks and a western and oriental food option. Please call the hostess for drinks and snacks at any time throughout the flight and they will be happy to help you."
Audio inflight entertainment?! AHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! That means straining painfully to see a tiny tiny screen with tiny little people that make tiny tiny movements!!! What kind of ghetto airline is this?! You should see the website for this airline! It's some budget crap that makes me really doubt that legitimacy of the airline. Is this reflective of what China will be like? Cramped, miserable, and low-rent?
